$24m redevelopment for Balmoral School, Auckland

Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye visited Balmoral School in Mt Eden, Auckland today and announced that Cabinet has approved around $24 million for the redevelopment of the school.

“The redevelopment will see most of the school’s existing buildings replaced or upgraded, and the total number of permanent learning spaces increased from 33 to 42. Two new teaching blocks will be built, including a two-storey block for years one to six, and a new block for years seven to eight,” says Ms Kaye.

Flexible learning spaces and a satellite unit for students with hearing difficulties are among features of the new, $17.5 million Ormiston Primary School, which was officially opened today by Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye.

ACC law change will help superannuitants after spouse’s death

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye has confirmed that Cabinet has signed off a law change that will help some superannuitants better cope with the accidental death of their spouse or partner.
“Under the current law, ACC weekly compensation paid to the spouse of someone who is fatally injured is generally available for five years,” says Ms Kaye.
“However, a clause in ACC’s governing Act requires superannuitants, after receiving both NZ Super and weekly compensation for a year, to choose between receiving either NZ Super or weekly compensation.

ACC partners with Safekids Aotearoa to reduce driveway injuries

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye says a new Safekids Aotearoa campaign supported by ACC will help reduce New Zealand’s high rate of children’s driveway deaths and injuries.
“On average, five children are killed every year and every fortnight a child is hospitalised with a significant injury after being hit by a vehicle on a private driveway,” says Ms Kaye.
“In total, ACC receives around 120 claims a year for driveway injuries to children.

Initial results show that official sign-ups for New Zealand ShakeOut 2015 have beaten our 2012 national earthquake drill, with over 1.35 million Kiwis signed up this year, says Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye.
“We estimate that more than 1.5 million Kiwis actually took part in ShakeOut today, practising the potentially lifesaving action of drop, cover and hold,” says Ms Kaye.

On the eve of the national ShakeOut earthquake drill at 9.15am on Thursday 15 October, Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye is urging as many people as possible to sign up and take part.
“Last night we had a timely reminder that New Zealand isn’t called the shaky isles for no reason, with a 5.8 magnitude quake just east of Pongaroa.
“On average, we have around one earthquake every half hour in New Zealand, or 20,000 earthquakes a year. Around 250 of these are large and close enough to feel.

Proposed $450m levy reductions signal ACC in great shape

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye today welcomed the start of ACC’s public levy consultation process.
“The ACC Board is proposing levy reductions worth $450 million in 2016/17, spread across work, earners’ and motor vehicle levies. This is possible because ACC is now in great financial shape,” says Ms Kaye.
“The proposed reductions are based on the Board’s new funding policy of each levied account targeting assets within a band of 100 and 110 per cent of the account’s liabilities.
